Ask The Experts About Examples Of Dna Models

Susan asks…

Why did James Watson choose to follow Pauling’s example of model uilding for his work on DNA?

admin answers:

Alpha helix of proteins presented by Pauling was fascinating and they thought if a polymer of amino acids could be like that a polymer of nucleotides could also be like that. Moreover the x-ray diffraction pattern seemed to suggest that.

Ask The Experts About Dna Model Ideas Middle School

Steven asks…

DNA double helix model?

I have to make a dna double helix for school. It has to be free standing meaning no support system going through the middle. Does anyone have any idea of how to make this or materials that are the best to use. Has any one does this before and has any advice.

Thanks!!!!
The only thing about pipe cleaners is, how will they stand up on their own?

admin answers:

Maybe use some pipe cleaners and buy some soft balls and put holes in them and then glue it all to some kind of base….i think a wooden base would be best though. Hope this helps!!!

Ask The Experts About Dna Model Project With Beads

James asks…

Help with dna model!!?

ok. i need to do a project due on moday february 28. i need to make a model of how proteins are assembled in the cytoplasm. it must include one section of mRNA, one ribosone, five or six tRNA molecules with one triplet code each, and a five or six amino acids. It should show the steps of protein synthesis. I can use construction paper, removable tape, beads, and pipe cleaners.. Please I need a website or any link that can help me with this!!

admin answers:

Wow this is very involved. I think the best way to go is to show a polysome, or at least a translating ribosome.

this video should help, ignore most of the mumbo jumbo unless you understand it, and instead focus on what each thing looks like and how its interacting.

Good luck with the project

Ask The Experts About Home Genetic Testing Kit

Ruth asks…

What to do about thin hair?

have thinning hair, particularly in the front. It’s been gradually thinning for years (since I was around 20). I had laser treatments, which were mildly effective, but I could not afford to continue them. I don’t like Rogaine because if you stop using it, the new hair falls out. Upon the recommendation of a hair transplant center, I went to my gynocologist for a hormone test; she told me that I had higher androgen levels and insulin resistance (which I understand is also called Metabolic Syndrome). This may be one reason that my hair is thinning, but I am not qualified to really speculate. It seems like it could be anything genetic.

My sister told me about a treatment that she saw on a home shopping channel. The treatment is called Ojan, and the kit comprises of hair shampoo, conditioner, a leave-in treatment and a serum that needs to be applied weekly. The cost is pretty high, but I am considering getting it because it would be cheaper than the laser treatments.

My questions are these: (1) Has anyone tried the Ojan kit that I am referring to? If so, was it helpful? Did your hair thicken up? Secondly, what other treatments are available that would not be cost-prohibitive? If I had the money, I would have continued the laser treatments, but even they seemed to take a long time.

ALSO, my hair used to be really thick and lustrous when I was in my twenties. It was shiney and bouncy. Now that I am in my thirties (35), it has gotten brittle and dull. It doesn’t have the bounce that it used to have..it’s coarser. I don’t blow dry it often, and I condition it. But I don’t like putting a lot of product on it because it makes it feel tacky and a different texture. Please give me advise on what I can do, if anything, to reverse this.

In may case, it was just the opposite. My hair was thinning when I was in my late teens and early twenties. Now, I’m almost 35 and my hair couldn’t be any better. Even though I do have a problems with hormones, I never really thought it was affecting my hair. Over the years, I’ve discovered a few things that affect the way my hair is either thin or “thick” (simply just looks better).

When I was younger, I was really worried and some people would tell me, I’d be bald in the future. I remember buying all these products (and spending all the money) to prevent that from happening. I thought my hair was falling out like crazy! (And it probably did). I treated myself with perms constantly to make my hair look fuller.

This lasted for years. Then I moved to another country (USA which was on the other side of the globe and the climate was warmer) and my hair situation persisted; however; it seemed it was falling out a little bit less…

When the straight perm (the Magic Japanese method) fever hit the US a few years back, I knew I had to go get it (even though my hair was naturally straight but freezy – from all the product I was using). I remember, it cost me like over $400!!! And my hair ended up looking awful. I even thought about suing the salon (where people pretended they didn’t speak any English). I cried for many, many days…

It was then I started letting go of the all the hair product – nothing would help… I started to treat my hair with Jergens Daily Mosturizer, using just a dab, to smooth my hair. I decided, if it was good for my skin, why wouldn’t be good for my hair? And it worked. After a year of using it (and my hair become really nice), my then employer recommended her hairstylist to me. I went and from now on, my hair was getting better and better. Still, I was blow drying my hair every other day and using Jergens.

Another couple of years had passed and the Magic Straight Perm was completely gone. My hair become freezy again and Jergens would make it flat and greasy. Then I discovered Garnier Fructis Style Curl Construct Mousse. It could be left in my hair without blow drying and it would make my hair completely straight! After it dried, I would give it some shape with a wide tooth comb and my fingers and give it a final touch with Salon Grafix Shaping Hairspray Extra Hold. This worked for me for quite a while and my hair had bounce, it was also soft and super shiny.

Last summer, I traveled to two different countries with two different climates. One was very dry and warm (where my hair was awesome); the other was wet an cold (my home country). Guess what. Back in my home country, my hair went back to its original style. It started falling out like crazy again, it would take at least 2 hrs. To air dry, and it was dull, freezy, and flat. No product would help – not even those that I had with me from US. I went there for a haircut which would make my hair even worse yet again.

However, after arriving back in US, my hair started to heal… I visited my very talented hairstylist (the one my former employer had recommended) and she brought it back to health.

Now, I don’t use the Garnier Mousse anymore. I let my hair air dry and then just shape it with a comb and my fingers and spray it with the Shaping Hairspray. That’s it. My hair is nice, soft, super shiny and never sticky (using the mousse in the past would make my hair sticky at times).

Thus, based on my experience, less is more. Leave your hair alone and let it be. Learn to love your hair the way it is. Enhance your hair with only one product (Shaping Hairspray). If you color your hair, go with a dark hue as opppose to light. Dark hue will heal your hair over time. It may show your bald spots at the beginning; however, if given time, it will help restore your hair and will give it sexy shine (I dye my hair blue black – you could go for dark mahogany to soft or brown black. Don’t go for pure brown or red hues – it will make your hair brassy). Skip the conditioner. Seriously. Find yourself a hairstylist that is actually educated in the field (it’s worth it to spend money at a high end salon), have a simple trim once in a while, and let her condition your hair then. On your own, only put the conditioner on your hair’s ends, before shampooing. This treatment will prevent your hair from becoming brittle and dull. DO NOT apply conditioner on your roots EVER. After every coloring, revitalize your hair with Biosilk Hair Therapy. Leave it in your hair over night. 150 ml bottle will last you forever.

Please remember, give your hair time to heal with this treatment. It will take at least 3-6 mos. Until you see results. If you are still desperate, you may opt for volumizing hair extensions as well (they are not as expensive as laser); however, I advise common sense. Do what you feel is right for your hair. Do not go for volumizing products only because they say they work (in reality they don’t).

And consider moving if you
