Ask The Experts About Identigene

Richard asks…

How reliable are the IDENTIGENE DNA test?

I just got one done and it says my 2mth old daughter is not mine. I’m not the biological father! Can mistakes be made?

admin answers:

I work with paternity testing for 7 years now (not in Identigene) and I can assure you: mistakes with a DNA test only can happen due human mistakes (so not the test it self). That´s why the labs usualy have lots of procedures to avoid this. There is two important steps on a paternity test: the sample collection and the lab processing. About the lab (identigene), it is one of the largest and sofisticated labs performing paternity tests in the world. I personaly know some people from there. So I really doubt they can let happend such kind of mistake. They are AABB certificated, wich is a very important quality certification.
The other step is the sample collection, which is done by you self. If you swab the right persons, and didn´t contaminated with anyone elses DNA (like touching the swab), the collection was right.
VERY IMPORTANT: did you child was fed with breast milk within one hour prior the sample collection?
The milk in the childs mouth can contaminate the sample with the mothers DNA, which will lead to a wrong result.
If you follow all the collection procedure in the instructions, your test is probably right (I´m sorry).
Please feel free to ask anything else.

Ask The Experts About Home Genetic Testing Kit

Betty asks…

Identigene Paternity test (RiteAid) home Kit. Anyone Use this? Need opinions. Please : )?

Ok I purchased a paternity test and my results finally came back today. Now its Strange because my son looks like my ex fiance. And Many Friends and family members believe that my ex is his father. Well I went with Identigene because it was affordable. Instead of having my ex tested, i had the other guy tested. The test came back that the other guy was not excluded from being the father. I called my sister and She told me to get a second opinion….

Also i was a bit confused by this part of the test. It said: The combined parentage index is 70,217,000 (corresponding to a probability of paternity of 99.9%, assuming prior probability = 0.5)
and indicates that these genetic data are 70,217,000 times more likely if _____is the Biological father of ________than if an untested, unrelated white man is the biological father. The Genetic analysis excludes at least 99.99% of white men from paternity.

Anyone tried this company at all? Anyone trust this company? I was thinking of sending in another kit with different names on it instead to see how accurate it really is. the kit was only 30$ and the lab fee’s were only 119$

admin answers:

The test results indicate that he is considered to be the biological father. I work for Identigene. The assumption of probability of 0.5 indicates that when we receive the DNA for testing, we assume the alleged father has 50/50% chance of being the biological father, either yes or no. The Combined Parentage Index (CPI) is based of calculations of the matching Loci (each marker tested that match is given a number based on how common it is in the population and calculated to give the CPI). In order to be considered the biological father that number has to be above 100. Your PCI is very high, which is a strong indication of paternity.

How You Get Your Free Dna Testing Kit

Due to advances in chemical analysis and a greater understanding of DNA and genetics, the once rare and expensive DNA screening of genetic material to determine relationships is now commonplace and available at very affordable prices.  Even the samples required for screening have been simplified, and an oral swab is now sufficient where previously a blood test would have been necessary. For a DNA test such as a paternity testing  paternity test to be carried out, genetic material has to be collected for each person participating, and a free DNA kit is provided by the supplier when you order the test.

The purpose of the kit is to provide all this needed to collect and return the sample, and although the contents will vary in detail between suppliers and laboratories, they will be intrinsically the same with respect to the necessary materials. These will include the swabs needed to collect the oral samples and a means of storing and returning these samples to the analyzing laboratory.  A submission form will also be necessary, where the details of the subjects are provided, and labels or pre-addressed envelopes also provided.  A very important component of the free kit is the instructions on how to use it.

Instructions are very important to some people, and even though sample collection with a swab is not difficult, it is important that they are clear. People are worried in case they affect the results by making some mistake when collecting the samples, and while that is unlikely, a video showing the entire procedure would be useful.  Nevertheless, it is simply a matter of taking a swab, rubbing it against the inside of your cheek and placing it in the container provided.  It is that simple.

Another important issue with some is the question of privacy. It is important to them that others don’t find out what they are doing, particularly if it does not concern others.  If that is you, then contact your supplier and request that the free DNA kit is provided in an unmarked package – nothing on it but your name and address. That will give you the privacy, and you can get on with the test.

Doing A Hair Test For Paternity

Judy Wellsworth asked:

In order to do a hair test for paternity, you need to have hair that still has the roots and follicles still attached. This means, taking strands from a brush will not work, you need to pull the hair from your head and look to make sure the hair follicles and roots come attached to the sample. In most cases of a paternity test, three to four strands of hair require submitting in order to do the DNA testing.

Hair test for paternity costs less than any other DNA testing and is just as reliable as any other form of testing. Genetic DNA paternity testing allows courts and individuals to confirm paternity of a child and the father or mother. These tests do hold up in court and do provide for accurate results. Most people use a clinical facility, but some receive a home test kit in the mail and send the sample out for testing.

Why do people need a hair test for paternity? In some cases, genetic DNA paternity testing is done to determine the parentage of a child. This procedure allows courts, parents and other concerned individuals to know who the parents are, whether it is for the mother or the father. This information allows the custodial parent to receive support of the said child. In most states, if you receive any kind of support from the government, you need to know the paternity of the father.

Before genetic DNA paternity testing helped to identify a father, men who were said to be a father were just that, determined and appointed the father. Today, a simple paternity test will reveal if the individual is the legal father or not. This procedure has also aided in the overturning of many rulings by the courts when confirming that someone was a father, they have been found not to be the father, which leads to hardship for many.

Earlier tests conducted used the blood type of the mother and father to determine if the baby belonged to the father. A very inconclusive test that throughout the years has caused many problems in the courts as fathers have begun to use the updated hair test for paternity as a way to prove they are not the biological father. Some people feel this could cause a big problem with child support agencies, as they try to collect from the real father after collecting support from the wrong father for years.

With the advancement of DNA testing, the entire process has helped and hindered in many areas as people use the genetic DNA paternity testing to find lost children and find missing fathers. Technology keeps advancing and so does paternity testing.
